One material I return to again and again in furniture making is plywood. While it may not always receive the same attention as solid hardwoods, plywood offers a combination of strength, stability, versatility, and value that makes it exceptionally well suited for high-quality, long-lasting, functional furniture.

One of plywood’s greatest advantages is its structural stability. Unlike solid wood, which expands and contracts with changes in humidity, plywood is engineered from multiple layers of wood veneer laid with alternating grain directions. This cross-laminated construction dramatically reduces warping, cracking, and splitting over time. For my clients, this means furniture that stays square, doors that continue to close properly, and tabletops that remain flat year after year, even in challenging indoor climates.

Strength is another reason I rely on plywood. When properly selected and used, plywood offers excellent load-bearing capacity relative to its weight. It is available in a wide range of thicknesses, grades, and veneer faces, from utilitarian shop-grade panels to beautifully finished hardwood veneers such as oak, maple, birch, or walnut. This allows me to tailor the material precisely to the project—prioritizing strength where it is needed, visual appeal where it will be seen, and cost efficiency where appropriate. When paired with solid wood edging or accents, plywood furniture can achieve a refined, custom appearance that rivals fully solid-wood pieces.

From a sustainability perspective, plywood is a responsible choice. Because it uses thin veneers rather than large solid boards, it makes more efficient use of timber resources. Many high-quality plywoods are manufactured from fast-growing or responsibly managed forests, allowing clients to enjoy fine furniture with a reduced environmental footprint. For customers who value durability and sustainability, this balance is particularly important.

Finally, plywood offers excellent value. Its consistency and predictability reduce waste and allow for precise craftsmanship, which translates into better results and more efficient use of labor.
